What is Telehealth?

Telehealth uses video-conferencing to bring respiratory health education to you. Telehealth sessions are similar to our in-office asthma education sessions with the added benefit of being conducted remotely. This means you can speak to our respiratory health educators from your local WA Country Health Service Hospital, health centre, community centre, telehealth enabled GP surgery or even from home.

Asthma WA provides a free telehealth service for people living in regional WA with asthma/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), providing clinical support and education for both consumers and health professionals.

People diagnosed with asthma or COPD can refer themselves for a free telehealth session with a respiratory health educator for support on how to manage their condition. These sessions allow time to ensure that you are on track with your medication and fully understand your asthma or COPD.

Is my GP involved in telehealth?

Your GP will be kept informed by our Respiratory Health Team as will your My Health Record (should you have one), to ensure clear communication between your health support network. You can also choose to have a member of your local healthcare team join you for your consultation.

What happens in a telehealth session?

You can expect your telehealth appointment to be very similar to a face-to-face consultation: you can talk about your asthma or COPD, ask questions or raise concerns.

Asthma WA telehealth sessions are about educating not diagnosing. Your respiratory health educator might ask you similar questions to your GP, but their goal is to help you to manage your condition better. These sessions are usually around 45 minutes to an hour-long, allowing plenty of time to talk about your asthma or COPD and the steps you can take to improve your quality of life.

Telehealth carries with it the same privacy and confidentiality assurances as face-to-face consultations. You won’t be required to operate the telehealth equipment yourself unless you choose to have the appointment at home.

Who delivers Asthma and COPD telehealth?

Asthma WA has a team of respiratory health nurses and educators who give all asthma and COPD education sessions. They are trained to help you learn to manage your condition, check your medical device technique as well as help you understand your diagnosis and medication.
