Social distancing refers to the practice of restricting when and where people can gather to stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases. Social distancing measures include limiting large groups of people coming together, reducing gatherings in closed buildings and cancelling events

Whilst practising social distancing, people can travel to work (including by public transport) and carry out normal duties. Social distancing outside the workplace is aimed at nonessential activities and includes

  • Avoid crowds and mass gatherings.
    • Avoid small gatherings in enclosed spaces, for example restaurants, cinemas, indoor events
    • Mass gatherings are currently being cancelled in Australia.
    • Limit your need to go to busy places – public spaces, shopping centres etc (this does not mean you cannot go grocery shopping or to other essential appointments and activities)
  • Attempt to keep a distance of 1.5 metres between yourself and other people where possible, for example when out and about in public spaces.
  • Do not shake hands or touch other people
  • Wash hands thoroughly when you arrive at work and arrive home.  Use hand sanitiser regularly and often during the day

Social Distancing is commonly used by Public Health Departments around the world to limit Influenza Pandemics, and other disease outbreaks – generally those that affect respiratory systems, such as Coronavirus.  Countries around the world are using it to varying degrees right now and Australia is following their lead.
