Whether it’s turning base metals into gold or divining wine from grapes, alchemy is the magical process of converting one substance into another.
A family owned vineyard, husband and wife team Brad and Sarah Mitchell operate and own The Alchemists with minimal intervention, and the wines follow the same philosophy.
With a shared love of nature, science and fine wines, they discovered they could combine their passions and apply their knowledge to a new quest – the sacred science of transforming the humble grape into a divine elixir. The vines were planted in 1996 and 1999, with The Alchemists label commencing in 2008.
Minimal Intervention wines are labour intensive in the vineyard, with many activities like pruning, canopy management, composting and harvest all carried out by hand. You will find sheep in the vineyard keeping weeds at bay and organically fertilising the vines as they do.
When it comes to the wine making, ‘minimal intervention’ means they are free from chemical adjustments. Where possible, only natural indigenous yeasts are used, and the wines are a true expression of the vineyard.
